One of the most popular souvenir items for tourists (aside from the ever-popular stuffed camels and pyramid models) are papyrus scrolls that have been painted and decorated with hieroglyphics.

Antique collectors should be wary of people selling the real antiques because they will most probably end up buying fake goodies at exorbitant prices. You might be able to find a genuine one but you will definitely have a hard time getting them off Cairo because of the legalities involved.

At Khan al-Khalili market you will find jewels, spices, leather goods and items made of brass and copper. If you are joining a guided tour then you will most probably end up in the same places where the other tourists will go. If you know someone in Cairo then you can ask your friend to bring you to the interior areas where you will find silk and handmade robes called gellibayas. Essential oils are also a-plenty in Cairo if you know where to find them.

An-Nahassin is the best place to find copper and brass wares. You can purchase engraved brass trays and wooden stands here and give them to the folks back home as coffee tables. If these are too bulky for you then settle for the smaller items like bowls, cups and plates.

Cairo is an ideal place to buy gold and silver because these items are cheap here. Among the most common items are scarab beetles which you can find at Sharia Abdel Khalek Sarwat or the Sharia al-Muizz li-Din Allah goldsmith bazaar. Visit Al Bustan near the World Trade Center and get antique looking lamps and cushions.
