Cairo Egypt Travel Guide - Cairo or Al-Q?hirah (which means The Triumphant) is Egypt’s capital. It is an exotic city that has caught the attention of many Westerners because of its pyramids and other attractions. It ranks 16th in the world’s list of most populous metropolitan areas with 17.285 million people. It is considered Africa’s most populous area.
Cairo Egypt has one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has been ruled by Pharaohs, British colonizers, Caliphs, Romans, Turkish khedives and French colonizers. You can just imagine the rich culture that Cairo has.
If you want to relive history and travel back in time then a visit to Cairo should be on top of your list. Majority of those who visit Egypt start their tour in Cairo then move out to the Nile Valley and other historical areas. There are other attractions in Upper Egypt including the Valley of Kings. If you are fond of diving then the Red Sea Coast presents a lot of opportunities for diving, snorkelling and communing with nature.
Cairo may be populous but it is Africa’s largest City with an area four times that of Paris. While in Cairo, you may want to go on a side trip to nearby town Giza for the Pyramids and the Sphinx. There are various Egyptians museums if you are fascinated by Egyptian antiques and culture.
The city has a fascinating history from the time it started as a Roman trading post, as a city taken over by the Arabs in the 7th century up to the 1952 revolution which was responsible for bringing back Cairo to Egyptian hands. With each new conqueror and ruler came a new city and a new influence which only made Cairo historically richer.
If you want to relive Cairo’s history you can walk through the different areas or districts as each one has its own identity depending on who built the district. Despite being ruled by Muslims, Cairo is predominantly a Christian city but its way of life highly influenced by the Muslim culture. This can be felt during Ramadan when the city comes alive only at night.
When you finally see the Pyramids of Giza, remember that it took 2.3 million stones (each one with an average weight of 2.5t tons) to build Cheops (the largest pyramid. The Pyramid of Giza was once the world’s tallest man-made structure until the title was grabbed by the Eiffel Tower in 1889.
But Cairo Egypt is not all history and reminiscing. It is also an ideal place to shop for antiques and souvenirs for the folks back home like rugs and mummified lizards. If you are interested in these kinds of items then don’t forget to visit Khan El Khalili.
If you want hassle-free sightseeing then take the Felucca (the Egyptian version of the gondolas of Venice) and explore Cairo’s natural gifts. Nothing can be more historical than visiting Mount Sinai if you know the story of Moses and the Ten Commandments. Nothing beats a night cruise along the Luxor temples though.
